The oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy carried out a coastal cruise around La Plata Island in August 2001 onboard the R/V RIGEL. The main objective was to study the distribution and interaction of ecological variables affecting phyto-zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, as a tool for the evaluation of coastal marine resources. An important aspect is the bathymetry of the area influencing the biological component. Shallower waters are found southwards allowing the occurrence of upwelling and advection processes that bring nutrient rich waters to the surface. This is shown by the high chlorophyll "a" content found in the south, favorable for phyto- and zooplankton production, also abundant in that region. The cellular biomass was composed by species that are indicative of mixed waters, warm-oceanic and upwelling waters with increased abundance towards the south. The tendency of increased biological productivity in the southern margin of La Plata Island is coincident with other ecosystems such as the Galápagos Islands and Santa Clara Island. These southern areas area important ecological niches, i.e. birds and marine mammals, decisive for coastal marine resources support. It is of extreme importance to continue the vigilance and control of these areas, specially due to the negative effects that the proximity of commercial marine traffic may produce.
